Abstract
Distribution and size structure of four Notoacmea limpets were studied in several boulder shores in Amakusa. N. concinna occurred in the upper intertidal zone, followed by N. teramachii and N. nigrans in the middle intertidal zone, and N. schrenckii in the lower intertidal zone. Although vertical distribution of these species overlapped with each other, the peak of density of each species occurred at almost the same tide level. The frequency of N. teramachii decreased from the exposed shore to the sheltered shore, but that of N. nigrans increased. The size structures of N. teramachii and N. nigrans had a clear mode with narrow range, while that of N. concinna and N. schrenckii had unclear modes with wide range. In some shores, the mode sizes of N. nigrans and N. teramachii decreased with decreasing tidal height. Probable factors related to the distributions of these four species and their interactions are discussed.
