Abstract
Respiration and ammonia excretion rates of freshwater mussels Unio douglasiae were measured. The live freshwater mussels used in this experiments were ranged from 0.600 to 2.735 g in soft body wet weight. The respiration rate by the Winkler titration method was 0.158 to 0.560 ml/individual/h and the ammonia excretion rate by the Colormetric indophenol method was 4.886 to 39.788 μg atm/ind./h at 24±1℃, respectively. Both rates per individual increased in proportion to increment in body weight. The regression for respiration rate (R : ml/ind./h) and ammania excretion rate (E : μg atm/ind./h) in relation to soft body wet weight (W : g) are R=0.2189 W^<0.7792> and E=9.6438 W^<1.1923>, respectively. The ratio of respiration rate and ammonia excretion rate (O/N ratio by atom) varied from 12.5 to 40.4 with the mean±S.D. was 25.5±8.5. The ratio suggests Unio douglasiae mainly metabolizes lipid and protein to an equal degree.
