In the course of an investigation of ion exchange and diffusion phenomena in the Pyrex glass surface layer by secondary ion mass spectrometry, we found that the diffusion of silver was markedly retarded when sodium in the surface layer had been replaced nearly completely by potassium. The interdiffusion coefficients at 335°C and 2 atomic % Ag were 1.4 × 10-11 cm2 s-1 for Ag-Na and 5.2 × 10-14 cm2 s-1 for Ag-K. This phenomenon was successfully applied to prevent the loss of traces of silver due to its diffusion into the glass, during the decomposition of cocoa doped with traces of silver by dry ashing at 400°C for 2 h followed by wet oxidation with a 1:1 mixture of nitric and perchloric acids, and during the evaporation of dilute silver nitrate solutions (0.5 ppm Ag in 1 M nitric acid) to dryness.Pyrex beakers treated with molten potassium nitrate at 500°C for 2 h were nearly comparable to.quartz beakers from the viewpoint of the loss of silver. The former was prepared easily and inexpensively, and had sufficient resistances to mechanical and thermal shocks.
