説明

Although no distinct color appeared immediately after spraying K4 [Fe(CN)6] solution on Cr3+ spot on a filter paper, a clear yellow coloration appeared ca. 3 hrs. later and it was stable for several days.
Combining this color reaction with the paper-chromatographical development, the authors identified Cr3+ discriminating it from Ag+, Hg2+, Sn4+, Sb3+, Bi3+, As3+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Fe3+, Cu2+, Co2+, Pb2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Al3+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Li+, NH4+, Na+, K+ and CrO42-. The Rf values as well as the difference in the coloration on spraying K4 [Fe(CN)6] for those ions were tabulated (Table I).
As the solvent for development, acetone-hydrochloric acid mixture (anhydrous acetone-35% hydrochloric acid-water, 10 : 1 : 0.5 by volume) or methanol-hydrochloric acid mixture (methanol-35% hydrochloric acid, 10 : 3 by volume) was recommended. The minimum detectable amount of Cr3+ was about 5 μg.
The sensitivity not much inferior to that of the conventional diphenylcarbazide method and the simplicity in the procedure together with the stability of the coloration make this color test much reliable.
Care must be taken to dry up the filter paper thoroughly before spraying the reagent in order to remove the remaining hydrochloric acid, since a satisfactory color reaction could not be expected at low pH levels.
