Abstract

The free cuting steel sample was dissolved in perchloric acid, the excess of acid was driven off, the residue was treated with hydrochloric acid and the iron as a main component was separated by extraction with methyl isobutyl ketone. The aqueous layer was evaporated to dryness and the organic substances were decomposed. The residue was taken up in 10ml 6N hydrochloric acid, a little starch solution added, and made up to 50ml with water. An aliquot was taken for polarographic determination of lead at -0.3-0.7V.<BR>0.10.4% lead in a steel containing 0.4% nickel, 1.5% chromium, 1.0% manganese and 0.5% molybdenum was determined easily by the proposed method. It has a special merit for routine analysis in the plant as it requires less reagent than the conventional methods, in which lead is determimed after the isolation from the other elements or in the presence of Fe after it is reduced to Fe2+.
