抄録

No report has yet been published on the separation of sulfate and tellurate ions by the use of ion exchange resin. The present authors found that the following procedure gave quite satisfactory results for this purpose.<BR>Neutral or weak hydrochloric acid solution (below 0.1 N) of the sample is passed through the Amberlite IRA-400 resin bed (RCI form, 80120 mesh, 1 cmφ × 5 cm). All sulfate ions adhere to the resin bed, while tellurate ions go into the filtrate quantitatively. After washing the resin bed with water, sulfate ions can be readily eluted out with 10 % sodium chloride solution. The procedure is very simple and the separation is very good.<BR>This procedure was applied to the detection of neutron-induced radionuclide 35S, whose existence was considered to be very probable, in the socalled “Bikini Ashes”. The “Ashes” were treated according to the procedure shown in Table 4. Some radioactivity was observed in the barium sulfate fraction, and it was attributed to 35S from its β-ray energy and half -life measurements (Fig. 1 and 2).
