Description

The extraction of zirconium (IV)-Alizarin Red S complex with high molecular weight ammonium salt and the formation of polycomplexes in the organic phase have been investigated to increase the sensitivity of spectrophotometric determination of zirconium (IV) with Alizarin Red S.<BR>The complex having 1:1 mole ratio of zirconium (IV)-Alizarin Red S can be extracted into toluene containing tri-n-octylammonium chloroacetate, and the distribution constant has been determined. The polycomplex is formed by shaking the 1:1 complex in the organic phase with buffer solution of pH 4.1. The polycomplex formed by this procedure has an absorption maximum at 538 mμ, but has also an absorption at 550600 mμ by which it is distinguished from the corresponding molybdenum (VI) complex. Several factors are examined for the extractability of the complex in the first extraction and the absorbance of the polycomplex formed by the second shaking. In the analytical condition, the sensitivity increases about four times as much as that of aqueous phase without lowering of the selectivity. Molybdenum (VI) and tungsten (VI) interfere seriously, but thorium (IV) and uranium (VI) only slightly.
