Description

Near infrared absorption spectra from 1400mμ to 1800mμ of fourteen lanthanide elements in deuterium oxide solution have been studied. Of these, praseodymium, dysprosium, erbium and thulium had each an absorption band in the region. Since those near infrared absorptions of the above elements arise from 4f electrons of inner shell as in the case of visible and ultraviolet regions, their spectrum characteristics are independent of the difference between water and deuterium oxide as solvent. The molecular extinction coefficients for the above elements were calculated, but the values were not very accurate because their bands superposed on that of water contained in sample salt as crystalline water. Thus it was not possible to exclude water perfectly by deuterium substitution.<BR>Spectrophotometric data obtained with Cary spectrophotometer for dysprosium, erbium and thulium in deuterium oxide solution are given in the table. All absorption maxima obeyed the Beer's law to a satisfactory degree, indicating that these absorption peaks could be used for analytical and other purposes.
