A new chelating cellulose derivative containing a dithiocarbamate functional group was synthesized and its properties were investigated. Cellulose was converted to tosylcellulose with p-TsCl and led to aminocellulose (BUA) by substitution reaction with butylamine. Dithiocarbamatecellulose (BUD) was obtained by treating BUA with carbon disulfide and ammonia. The adsorption of 19 metal ions on BUD was investigated by using tracer technique. The adsorptions of Cr6+, Mo6+, Sb3+, Sb5+, Se4+ and Te4+ became maximal at a low pH region and those of As5+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, In3+ and Pb2+ became maximal at a neutral pH region respectively. The adsorptions of Ag+ and Co2+ increased at a high pH region. No Ca2+ and Na+ were adsorbed. The capacity of BUD for Hg2+ was determined by batch operation. The value at 98 % adsorption was reached to 40 mg Hg2+/g BUD. Capacities of Cr6+, Cu2+ and Pb2+ obtained by the column operation were 15mg Cr6+/g BUD, 5.5 mg Cu2+/g BUD and 4.7 mg Pb2+/g BUD respectively. The adsorption for Cu2+ was reduced to one-quarter its quantity by treating BUD with 0.1 N HCl solution or to one-half by keeping it at a temperature of 110°C for 20 h. Impurities in BUD were analyzed by neutron activation analysis. It was found that the amounts of impurities seemed to be negligible on applying BUD to trace analysis.
