Description

The effect of acetylene gas purity on the atomic signal of Ca, Sr and other metal elements was investigated. The contents of impurities in commercial acetylene gas were determined by GC and the time profile of impurity concentrations during acetylene gas discharge was obtained. The relative concentrations of N2, CH4 and PH3 decreased rapidly with the discharge of acetylene gas, while the reverse was observed for divinylsulfide, acetone and DMF impurities. Among the elements studied, the atomic absorption and flame emission signals of Ca are most strongly affected by the use of a low grade acetylene gas (purity; 92.096.1%). Trace PH3 in a fuel also depresses the atomic absorption and flame emission signals of alkali and alkaline earth metals. The signal depression rate is largest for strontium and reaches 57% at ppm levels of PH3.
