Abstract

Determination of iron (0.32%) in aluminum alloys by extraction with methyl isobutyl ketone and by titration with EDTA using salicylic acid as an indicator has been investigated and a satisfactory result was obtained. The recommended procedure is as follows.
1g of the alloy sample is dissolved in 20ml hydrochloric acid (1 : 1), followed by heating with 23 ml nitric acid for dissolving of copper and for oxidation of iron. Silica is filtered off for a sample containing much silicon and the filtrate is transferred into a separatory funnel, an equal amount of hydrochloric acid is added, shaken well with 20 ml methyl isobutyl ketone for extraction of iron. The solvent layer containing copper is washed with hydrochloric acid (1 : 1) to remove copper, and the iron in the solvent is taken up in water. This is transferred into a beaker and the solution is adjusted pH 2.22.8 by addition of acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer. The solution is heated at 40°C and titrated with a standard solution of M/20 EDTA, using salicylic acid as an indicator.
By use of this method, iron in aluminum alloy can be estimated within 30 min with the error of ± 0.01%.
