Description
In this study we evaluted 100 patients treated surgically for metastatic lung tumor in our department. There were 58 males and 42 females, with an age range of 6 months to 77 years (average 47.2 years). The primary tumors were renal cell carcinoma in 16 cases, osteosarcoma in 12, colorectal carcinoma in 10, choriocarcinoma in 9, soft tissue sarcoma in 8, breast carcinoma in 7, testicular tumor in 7, lung carcinoma in 7, osteogenic sarcoma other than osteosarcoma in 6, laryngeal carcinoma in 3, others in 15. The metastasis was solitary in 46 patients. Unilateral multiple metastases were found in 26 and bilateral multiple metastases in 28. The tumor doubling time (T. D. T.) was calculated in 53 cases, and the mean T. D. T. was 75.4 days. The disease free interval (D. F. I.) was calculated in all cases, and the mean D. F. I. was 22.5 months. The overall average number of metastatic lesions was 3.7 ; it was 2.8 for carcinomas and 6.2 for sarcomas. Lobectomy was performed in 26 cases, and segmentectomy or partial resection or enucleation in 74. Second pulmonary resections were performed in 14 cases. The indication for lobectomy is a solitary metastasis originating from head and neck cancer, colorectal cancer or breast cancer.
