Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are industrial products manufactured by chlorination of liquid n-paraffin or paraffin wax with chlorine content between 40% and 70%. CPs are used as lubricants and metal cutting fluids, flame retardants in the rubber and plastics, paints, sealing materials and for other uses since the 1930s. The production of total CPs in China has drastically increased to about 600,000 tonnes in 2007. It seems that currently, China is the largest producer in the world followed by India with a production volume of >150,000 tones.
We detected high levels of POPs contamination in the polyurethane foam (PUF) and rubber materials which was used in high volume air sampler (HVS) to prevent noise and vibration. The levels of PCBs were: 4,000-5,900 ng/g in rubber, 10,000 ∼ 16,000 ng/g in PUF. The rubber contained 2 to 6 % of CPs imported from China as chlorinated flame retardant according to the MSDS, which was the main contamination source of the POPs. The PCBs levels in imported CPs were 140-210μg /g(ppm) and homologue profile were similar to contaminated rubber.
This report describes the investigation of these incidents of POPs contamination which can have a large implication for the formation and distribution of unintentionally produced POPs when considering the large volumes of CPs. It has up to now not assessed to which extent the PCBs, PCNs and CBz impurities in the chlorinated paraffins additionally contributes to the unintentionally POPs contamination of food but also the environment and possibly humans. The results from this study suggested that unintentionally POPs contaminations as impurities from technical grade chemicals such as CPs are serious problems for unintentional POPs inventories especially for developing countries with low techniques and increasing production. The chlorinated aromatics (PCBs, PCNs, CBzs) in technical CPs are most likely formed by chlorination of parent aromatics impurities in the starting paraffin material.
Considering that chlorinated paraffins are produced in the order of 1 million tonnes per year such a contamination could have large implications on total production and release of these unintentional POPs release from CP production and use.
