Brassolaeliocattleya Chain-Tzy Emperor and Cymbidium Sazanami plants were grown either at 8-28°C (cool room), 15-30°C (warm room) or 20-32°C (hot room) from 5th Nov, when both orchid plants were at the stage of flower bud development, to the clarify effect of temperatures on nutritional levels in plants and flowers.
Pseudobulbs of Cattleya plants in the cool room showed a lower rate of dry matter compared with that of those in the warm room. Besides, these in the hot room decreased concentrations of soluble sugar and starch in addition to the rate of dry matter. In Cattleya leaves of plants in the cool and the hot room, especially in the latter, the rate of dry matter and concentrations of soluble sugar, starch and ash were lower than in those of plant leaves in the warm room. A decreased level of protein was also found in the leaves in the hot room.
In Cymbidium plants, soluble sugar and starch concentrations in both pseudobulbs and leaves were increased in the cool room but decreased in the hot room. There was no difference in the rate of dry matter or concentrations of protein and ash in pseudobulbs and leaves among plants grown in the three rooms.
In comparison with the nutrition level in Cattleya and Cymbidium plants, the former plants showed higher levels of starch, protein and ash, and their fluctuations due to ambient temperatures were much greater.
Flowering of both Cattleya and Cymbidium plants was delayed one month in the cool room and advanced one month in the hot room compared with that of plants in the warm room. Based on flower size and fresh weight, flowers that opened in the warm room were superior, while the rate of dry matter and concentrations of soluble sugar, starch and ash did not differ among plants grown in the three rooms.
