Abstract

The effects of activated charcoal supplemented in the non-renewable nutrient solution on the harvested fruit number of cucumbers (Cucumis sativus L.) grafted on the bloomless rootstock in hydroponics were investigated. The vegetative growth at the end of the experiment was unaffected by supplementation with activated charcoal. The number of harvested fruits of the cucumber 'Shogoin-aonaga-fushinari' grafted on the bloomless rootstocks 'Hikari-power' and 'Kitora' was increased by supplementation with activated charcoal. This result suggests that root exudates induced a decrease in the harvested fruit number by absorbing the exudates.
