We compared the differences in the occurrence of blossom-end rot in cherry tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. var. cerasiforme Alef.), 'SunCherry Extra', and large fruit 'Ohgatafukuju' tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), which were cultured in high and low nutrient solution concentrations in the spring (high temperature season) or autumn (low temperature season). The incidence of vascular bundles near the abscission layer in the primary stage of blossom-end rot was examined in both groups.
1. No blossom-end rot was observed in the autumn crop of cherry tomatoes. Marked blossom-end rot was observed in large fruit tomatoes cultured in high concentrations of nutrient solution in the spring crop.
2. The growth of cherry tomatoes was not related to temperature, light intensity or nutrient concentrations of the culture solution. The growth of large fruit tomatoes was related to temperature and light intensity and was greater in low concentrations of solution than in high concentrations in the spring crop.
3. There were no differences between normal and blossom-end rot fruit in the vascular bundles of pedicels near the abscission layer in the primary stage of blossom-end rot in cherry tomatoes. In large fruit tomatoes the number of vascular bundles in blossom-end rot fruit was more decreased and the size of vessels was smaller than those in normal fruit.
