Abstract

Manganese oxides precipitate by microbial mediation in the seawater supply system to aquariums in the Marine Science Museum of the Tokai University. We observed the accumulation of Manganese-oxidizing bacteria and manganese oxide on the slide glasses placed in the system, and investigated morphologically and chemically the growth process of manganese oxides. The bacteria, first attached separately on the glasses, grew in size and number and clumped together and then decomposed by bacteriolysis. The manganese oxides precipitated as the bacteria decomposed, and grew from douthnut-shaped, then dome-shaped to cauliflower-shaped precipitate. The honeycomb sutructure characteristic of marine manganates appeared in the doughnut-shaped precipitate. The growth rate of oxides was 1.8×10-2mm yr-1and th oxidation rate constant kMn of Mn(II) was 6×1019mol-4l4d-1. The contents of Co and Ni in manganese oxides increased with time by post-depositional uptake, but Cu content did not increase.
