抄録

The diel vertical migration (DVM) patterns of dominant myctophid fishes were studied in the subarctic and transition waters of the western North Pacific. Four patterns were identified based on their DVM; migrants, semi-migrants, passive-migrants and nonmigrants. Special studies were focused on feeding habits and reproduction of three dominant myctophid species, Diaphus theta, Stenobrachius leucopsarus and S. nannochir. The detailed examination of the stomach contents showed that the DVM of myctophid fishes provides a feeding migration into the productive epipelagic zone from the mesopelagic zone. Knowledge of the feeding habits, such as daily ration, contribute not only to construction of a fisheries resources management model with higher precision but also to an understanding of the biological pump in the pelagic zones. The results on early growth and reproductive biology of D. theta suggest a feeding and spawning migration between the subarctic and transition waters in the western North Pacific.
