Abstract

The catalytic activities of aluminophosphate molecular sieves containing a metal component (Mg, Mn, or Si) were examined for several acid-catalyzed reactions including dehyd ration of ethanol, cracking of hexane and conversion of methanol into hydrocarbons. Among Mgcontaining materials (MAPO-n), the catalytic activity generally decreased in the order MAP0-36>MAPO-5>MAPO-11. The activities of Mn-containing materials (MnAPO-n) were almost the same as those of the corresponding MAPO-n. Si-containing aluminophosphates (SAPO-n) show much higher activity than MAPO-n or MnAPO-n. The catalytic activities of the aluminophosphate molecular sieves were much lower than those of ZSM-5 zeolites.<BR>The temperature programmed desorption spectra of ammonia were in conformity with the catalytic data. The spectra of ammonia desorption from MAPO-n surfaces had no appreciable peaks due to strong acid sites. Among MAPO-n, MAPO-36 showed the presence of relatively strong acid sites. Infrared spectra of pyridine-adsorbed MAPO-n materials revealed the presence of both Brφnsted and Lewis acid sites on the MAPO-n materials.
