Description
A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with sudden onset of left hemiparesis. A CT scan (7 days after the onset) revealed a brain infarction (embolism) due to his heart disease, atrial fibrillation. About 1 month later, high grade fever due to pneumonia had continued and he had developed complicated sepsis which was detected methicilline resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the blood culture. About 3 months after the cerebral infarction, he frequently had a headache and he became drowsy. A CT scan revealed an abnormal cystic lesion with marked ring enhancement at the site of low density area (right fronto-temporo-parietal region), which suggested an brain abscess. Emergency aspiration of the abscess was accomplished and the culture detected disclosed MRSA. After adequate antibiotics treatment for MRSA and surgical operation, his illness gradually improved and he was discharged. The doctor report a rare case of brain abscess following cerebral infarction.
