Description
We studied the working condylar movement in the lateral movements in 40 normal young adults. The following results were obtained:<BR>1. The working condylar movements were classified into 3 types:<BR>1) rotation type, 2) shift type and 3) winding type<BR>2. The shift type included 1) external side shift, 2) internal side shift and 3) reciprocal sideshift.<BR>3. The range of motion was smallest in the rotation type, was largest laterally in the shift type, and was the largest anteroposteriorly in the winding type.<BR>4. The difference of movement pattern between rotation type and shift type could not beidentified by incisal movement.<BR>5. The rotation type was observed more in the cuspid-guided and the cuspid-premolar-guidedlateral occlusions. The group-functioned occlusion had more shift type than the others.<BR>6. In the winding type, the mandible was guided more posteriorly at the early stage of lateralexcursion in the V-shape, and was guided more flatly and anteriorly in the A-shape.<BR>7. It was suggested that the lateral occlusal guidance was one of the most influential factorsfor working condylar movement.
