The effect of debridement for shallow pockets that bled on probing during maintenance care was studied in six patients. Twenty-four shallow pockets (less than 3 mm) that showed bleeding on probing were selected for this study and were randomly assigned to 2 groups: a debridement group and a control group (no instrumentation). The pockets of the debridement group had their subgingival plaque removed by a curette type scaler. All sites were examined clinically and microbiologically before the debridement, and 1 week and 3 months after the debridement. The results showed no significant clinically or microbiological difference between the 2 groups. This suggests that when plaque control is done well, the effect of debridement for shallow bleeding pockets during maintenance care is small.
