Abstract

The creation and proper management of landfills for waste material are an indispensable part of a society aiming to become a recycling society. Although landfills are indispensable facilities, because of the concerns about the sites themselves and the safety of the waste matter disposed in them, it is difficult to acquire the agreement of local residents for the construction of such sites. Therefore, it is very difficult to find new sites for waste disposal. Because of this background, there are landfills that would require: (1) Recovery of functions to preserve the environment using present knowledge and developed along present standards, (2) Restoration in order to be able to utilize them again and, (3) Pollution clean-up. These problems can be solved by applying new technologies and, (4), it is believed that there are sites that would become available to provide new landfill capacity. The purpose of this research is to establish a comprehensive technological system for the revitalization of landfills. To that end, technologies for the excavation and recovery of resources from existing landfills (both in use and filled) have been studied with a wide variety of properties and characteristics in their landfill strata.
