Abstract

As a means for realizing economic development without damaging the environment, it is urged to transform the current one-way type economy into a circular type one, where goods and waste circulate in an environmentally benign way. For this purpose, it is very important to quantitatively grasp the linkage relation between goods production and waste emission of the economy. Inputoutput analysis has been developed as a technique to quantitatively grasp the flow of goods in the artery sectors. Expanding this technique in order to also grasp the flow of waste is a promising way for the above-mentioned purpose. With this in mind, this paper describes the application of inputoutput analysis to issues of waste management. The topics covered include the classical emission model of Leontief, its application to the measurement of carbon dioxide emission, the Waste Input-Output model of Nakamura, Total Material Requirement, Ecological Footprint, and the application of the International IO model.
