Thanks to comprehensive measures being taken against illegal dumping, including amendments to the Waste Management Law and the establishment of an ‘Action Plan for combatting Illegal Dumping, ’ the Ministry of the Environment has successfully been able to halve the amount of illegally dumped industrial waste from 400, 000 tons a year at the peak period.<BR>Unfortunately, a total of 200, 000 tons a year of illegally dumped material still remains to be dealt with, along with the illegally dumped waste from the past which remains at the sites.<BR>Prefectures are currently conducting administrative subrogation to eliminate disturbances to local environmental conservation efforts due to illegal waste dumping. To help in these efforts, an official assistance system has been made available to them based on the Industrial Waste Special Measures Law and the Waste Management Law.<BR>This paper talks about the status quo of illegal dumping of industrial wastes and trends in the Ministry of the Environment to take measures against it.
