Abstract

Finding means for increasing the recycling rate of construction sludge has become an important task due to the fact that the current rate is the lowest of any waste produced at construction sites. This paper examines the technologies companies are developing to both minimize the volume of construction sludge produced and increase the amount of waste being recycled. Approaches being undertaken by construction associations are also shown.
Among construction companies, there are many new technical developments aimed at reducing the volume of construction sludge from cast-in-situ concrete piling works and cast-in-situ diaphragm wall construction works. Technologies for recycling sludge tend to be based either on new soil improvement methods or high-performance dewatering.
With respect to construction associations, initiatives made by the Japan Civil Engineering Contractors' Association, Inc. are discussed. The association is communicating these initiatives through a lecture series, and production of a manual entitled, Recycling of Construction Sludge. The association also intends to propose a new term for construction sludge because the current name may give an unfavorable impression and be misunderstood by ordinary citizens.
