Wet deposition of nitrate and ammonium for the Japanese Archipelago during the latter half of the 1980's was presented. These regions were divided into fifteen climatic regions with 114 meshes, and the annual and the seasonal nitrogen fluxes were esti mated. Wet deposition fluxes were determined from CRIEPI's regional monitoring data at twenty stations between October 1987 and September 1990. Estimated wet depositions of ammonium and nitrate over the Japanese Archipel ago were 336 GgN/y and 211 GgN/y, respectively. For Japan as a whole, wet deposi tion of nitrogen compounds in the warm season (April to September) and the cold season (October to March) was 57% and 43%, respectively. In the warm season, the major receptor of wet deposition was Kyushu, Chugoku, and Kanto regions, while in the cold season; it was the Hokuriku region facing the Sea of Japan. In the northwestern region of Japan over the past 10 years, annual average concentrations of nitrate and ammonium in precipitation generally increased at all stations . These calculations demonstrate that in-flow of nitrate and ammonium from outside plays an important role in the budget of nitrogen compounds in this region.
