Abstract

This article reviewed research on 3Rs (reduction, reuse, and recycling) and waste management and examined prospects of this research field . First, history of waste management in Japan was traced and what kinds of research performed in the past were summarized. Engineering played a significant role in waste management research in the 20th century, and since 1990s research has become diverse and interdisciplinary. Then, focusing on several viewpoints such as measures in waste management hierarchy and new keywords, this study discussed accomplishment and prospect of research on 3Rs and waste management.
