The per capita rice consumption rate in South East Asia has started to decrease, while, rice yields continue to increase. It is forecasted that South East Asia will have a surplus paddy field area. This surplus area could be used to produce energy crops without decreasing the forest area in these countries. The total surplus area in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam is predicted to be 15.6 million ha in 2050. Such an area could produce 1.18 billion t of sugar cane. The energy from this sugar cane would be 2.4 times larger than that produced by the current atomic power generators in Japan.
