Poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC) is one of the most popularly used plastics. The PVC production process consists of monomer production process and polymerization processes. Analysis of chlorine flow in the PVC production process, which consumes chlorine massively in the chemical industry, suggested a strategy to realize the zero-emission of chlorine in this process. In the VCM production process, various kind of chlorinated compounds are co-produced. Most of these co-products are combusted or discarded as a waste. Anaerobic bioconversion of these byproducts such as chlorinated ethane to VCM may be effective to realize zero the emission of chlorine in PVC production process. Hydrogen chloride produced by pyrolysis or combustion of PVC waste can be used for ferric chloride and poly aluminum chloride production. Furthermore production of chlorine gas from the HCl through catalytic reaction may ease transportation and storage of chlorine. Such kind of chlorine flow among heterogeneous chemical processes may reduce chloine consumption in the whole industry and contribute to make a balance between hydrogen chloride and sodium hydroxide consumption in the industry. Substitution of PVC to other materials will be a strategy for reducing chlorine use, a systematic methods of which can be deduced from an analysis of processing condition and commodity characteristics of plastics.
