Abstract

Heat island phenomenon is one of the serious problems that have been developed due to the intense of human activities over urban area. This phenomenon influences not only on an increase of the day with maximum temperature over 30°C and on the night with maximum temperature over 25°C, but also on local precipitation amount over urban area.
This study focused on the relationships between the rainfall frequency and the urban structure parameters in areas around Tokyo. Radar-AMeDAS data and urban structure parameters were used in the analysis. The urban parameters used in this study were as follows: Thermal land-surface characteristics represented by composite image of summer sunny days derived from NOAA-14/AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer), anthropogenic heat, ratio of green coverage, distance from north side of Tokyo Bay, average elevation, ratio of water area, and parameters of buildings form.
The results show the clear relationship between the heavy rain in the daytime over urbanized area and urban structures, however, evening rainfall may be affected by the moving rain events from the west.
