Abstract

Due to environmental loads of active nitrogen, issues such as nitrogen saturation in headwater basin, eutrophication in lakes, inner bays and inland seas, and groundwater contamination by nitrogen have become critical problems in Japan. Controls by environmental standards and effluent standards have made fair achievements in environmental protection but still unsolved problems are left. Toward integrated water quality management, relations among various standards, medium, and nitrogen sources are discussed briefly.
