To determine the mode of distribution of sea-drift seed dispersal plants we analyzed non-coding region (intron) of the chloroplast DNA rpl16 sequences of Heritiera littoralis Dryand, which occurs on the Ryukyu Islands, and other Heritiera spp. The results showed that the common haplotype of H. littoralis occurs on the northern part of Okinawa Island, while a new haplotype is present on the island,s southern part, plus on Ishigaki and Iriomote Islands. This distribution pattern indicates that seed dispersal via ocean currents allows sea-drift seed dispersal plants to achieve a wider distribution over a shorter time.
