Abstract

We conducted elemental analysis of some manures obtained from poultry house because we planned to apply them in an agricultural field for an examination of organic agriculture. We obtained commercially-marketed manures from poultry house. We digested them with nitric acid, and analyzed the mineral composition with ICP-OES. We detected higher than 20,000 ppm (w/w) of chromium from a feather meal product. It is a serious problem that chromium-contaminated manure was commercially marketed in Japan for agricultural use. Though fertilizers or soil amendments that are contaminated with hazardous elements should not be applied to agricultural field, there is no legal restriction with this product; because the standard of feather meal required by the Japanese official speciation is based on nitrogen content only. Thus, we would like to propose that the Japanese official specification of all types of organic manure should include the criteria of hazardous elements content.
