Abstract

Phytosulfokine (PSK) is the first isolated peptidyl plant growth factor from asparagus. PSK was found from cell culture medium in many dicot- and monocot-plants from cultured cells. PSK is thought to have a role in cell division, but the localization and the function of PSK in whole plant are still unknown. PSK gene was already isolated from rice. In order to clarify the function of PSK in rice plant, expression analysis of PSK was preformed by RT-PCR. Materials used were 2 week-old seedlings and ears in some developmental stages. In the seedlings, PSK expressed in whole plant, especially in root and in culm containing shoot meristem. In the ears, the expression of PSK increased after flowering. These results indicate that the spatial and temporal expression pattern of PSK was correspond to the region and time of cell division. From these results, it is thought that PSK has a function relating to cell division in whole plant as in cultured cells.
