Description

With the aim of investigating the association between the existence of postpharyngeal lymphoid follicles and type I allergy in subjects with only laryngopharyngeal symptoms, blood eosinophil number and serum total IgE/inhaled-allergen-specific IgE levels were assessed in 24 subjects with both of laryngopharyngeal symptoms and postpharyngeal follicles without nasal symptoms. Additionally, the associations between the positivity of the specific IgE and the effects of pharmacological therapies on the degrees of symptoms and the numbers of follicles were investigated. Seventeen of the 24 cases showed positive levels of at least any one of the allergic-specific IgE. The highest positive rate was for cedar pollen, followed in order by grass pollen and house dust. Antihistaminergic drugs or proton pump inhibitors were administered to all the subjects or only those with arytenoid edema, respectively. During treatment for 12 weeks, both the numbers of subjects showing an improved degree of symptoms and reduced numbers of follicles to less than five increased progressively. After 8 weeks, the group of subjects positive for specific IgE showed significantly higher rates for both the numbers in comparison with the group for IgE-negative subjects. These results suggest the profound association between the existence of postpharyngeal follicles and type I allergy, and that this sign could be the diagnostic clue for allergic diseases localized in the laryngopharyngeal region.
