Abstract

Melampsora chelidonii-pierotii is a heteroecious rust species that parasitizes Salix chaenomeroides and S. eriocarpa as uredinial-telial hosts and Corydalis incisa as a spermogonial- aecial host. Distribution of C. incisa and infection of plants with the rust were investigated in the riparian vegetation alomg the Kokai River, Kinu River, Sakura River and Sugao-numa, Western Ibaraki, Central Honshu, Japan. Corydalis incisa does not generally grow in willow forests but grows in Sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima) - Japanese hackberry (Celtis sinensis var. japonica) forests adjacent to willow forests. Many plants of C. incisa in the forests were infected with M. chelidonii-pierotii. In some cases, single or a few willow trees grow in Sawtooth oak - Japanese hackberry forests distant from willow forests near the riverside. Corydalis incisa plants growing in the forests near the willows were infected at high frequencies. Another species of Corydalis, C. decumbens grows in Sawtooth oak - Japanese hackberry forests adjacent to willow forests and many of the plants were infected with the rust. Corydalis incisa and C. decumbens appear to play an important role as spermogoniala-aecial hosts of rust. Riparian vegetation investigated in the present study appears to be suitable for constant host alternation of M. chelidonii-pierotii.
