Our research on the modification of various ion-exchangers for catalysis was summarized. 1) Acidic resins were studied as models for solid acid catalysts to find an induced heterogeneity of H-from sulf onic resin; the enhancement of strong acidity due to the synergetic effects of proton and metal cations; the catalytic activity determined by the electronegativity of cation except proton; an example of Lewis type site to coordinate a π-allyl intermediate. 2) The applicability of chelate resins to support was evidenced by the anchoring metal complexes. 3) Inorganic layer hosts, clay minerals and zirconium phosphates, were variously modified to control the host-guest chemistry for molecular recognition by the intercalation of metals or metal complexes with tuning guests. Thus, new types of molecular recognizing catalyst were designed to find the effective enantioselectivity, chemoselectivity or regio-selectivity as well as shape selectivity.
