Abstract
The activity of glutaral, phtharal, peracetic acid and sodium hypochlorite disinfectants against spores of Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633 was evaluated using carrier tests. At 20°C, 3% glutaral killed 102 spores of Bacillus subtilis within 1 hr, 0.3% peracetic acid killed 102 spores of Bacillus subtilis within 1 min and 0.1% sodium hypochlorite killed 102 spores of Bacillus subtilis within 20min. The activity of 3% glutaral solution was effective in 30 min at 30°C, 1 hr at 20°C and 2 hrs at 10°C. The activity of 0.3% peracetic acid solution was effective in 30 sec at 30°C, 1 min at 20°C and 2min at 10°C. The activity of 0.1% sodium hypochlorite was, however, considerably delayed by the presence of 0.1% albumin. 0.55% Phtharal showed little effect on the spore count even after 6 hrs. Based on these findings, glutaral and peracetic acid are recommended as having effective sporicidal activity.
