The WD-32 is a newly manufactured desktop washer-disinfector with automatic washing and thermal disinfection functions. The effectiveness of washer-disinfectors for viral disinfection by thermal disinfection has rarely been reported. We studied the capacity of this machine to disinfect instruments contaminated with a variety of viruses, such as hepatitis B and C virus, human immunodeficiency virus-1, norovirus and adenovirus. After washing, no HBV-DNA, HCV-RNA, HIV-1-RNA or norovirus-RNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction assay, and no cytopathic effect of the adenovirus was observed. Consistent application of the disinfection process with water at 80°C for ten minutes was observed. The WD-32 is a useful machine with the potential to save cost and space and to reduce the risk of nosocomial infection.
