Two meteorological observation sites with a 667 m difference in altitude were established in a catchment of a heavy snow district and continuous observations of the snow environment and snowmelt process were carried out by an automated data logging system. As a result, it became clear that the timing and intensity of outflow from the bottom of the snow cover (MR(a/o)) greatly differed. In snowmelt season, the time-lag between MR(a/o)s of the upper and lower sites was about 14 days, while the intensity of MR(a/o) in the upper site tended to increase more than at the lower site. It appears that the quantity of meltwater created by sensible and latent heat fluxes increases during the snowmelt season, because winds become stronger in the upper part of the catchment.
