Description

Trends of variables and coefficients in the Angstrom formula which estimates solar radiation from relative sunshine duration are investigated for observation results of Japan for the 16 years during 1986-2001. The following conclusions are drawn from this study: (1)significant increasing trends in solar radiation have been observed throughout Japan. It is suggested that the reduction of aerosol may have contributed to this factor; (2)uniform trends in relative sunshine duration have not been observed as in the case of solar radiation; (3)significant increasing/decreasing trends in coefficients of the Angstrom formula have been observed at many meteoro-logical stations; (4)coefficients in the formula should be calibrated against the observed solar radiation and relative sunshine duration using data for the period in which the estimation is required and not against long-term data.
