説明

Water samples of water holes which were dug for irrigation and for water supply were collected and analyzed chemically in Chinena village, central Zambia. There are four main dambos which are seasonally waterlogged, shal-low, linear depressions in this village. A part of ground water in the dambo area is contaminated by fertilizer or chemicals. The subsurface water at the upland is thought to evaporate during the flow downward, and the δ18O value of water at the lower reaches is a little higher than that at the upper area. Cation composition of ground water is changed by ion exchange with clay minerals during the flow downward. Alkali earth metals are major cations in the upper stream, on the other hand they are minor cations in the lower reaches. Na+ is major cation in the lower reaches. The concentration of Na+ has a mutual relation with the concentration of Cl-, and the concentration of HCO-3 correlates with the concentrations of Mg2+ and Ca2+. These results suggest the existence of two types of ground water. One is Na+-Cl- type, and the other is Ca2+(Mg2+)-HCO-3 type.
