Description

This study makes clear the taxonomic disposition of unusual plants of Asarum (Aristolochiaceae) in Niigata Prefecture and adjacent areas previously referred to as Heterotropa yoshikawai, an illegitimate name. Chromosomes and morphological features of 66 populations, including populations of Asarum megacalyx and A. ikegamii, which bear a close resemblance to the plants in question, were examined. Morphological and karyological investigations revealed that Heterotropa yoshikawai was obviously different from the above two species in karyotype, shape of the calyx tube and reticulation of the ridges within the calyx tube. I therefore recognize it as a distinct species, and validated it with the name Asarum yoshikawae. Additionally, the unusual plants from the northern part of Niigata Prefecture and southwestern Yamagata Prefecture are recognized as a new variety of A. ikegamii, and described as A. ikegamii Var. fujimakii. In connection with the taxonomic consideration. relationships among the three species are also discussed.
