Since Parmelia tinctorum NYL. scarcely grown in the area fronting on the Japan Sea of Hyogo Prefecture, its distribution was investigated with relation to some meteorological factors. The Warm Index and the minimum temperature are not correlated to the distribution of P. tinctorum in the region concerned (Fig. 1). The lichen occurs only in the area where the maximum depth of annual snowfalls is less than about 50 cm, and the habitats increase in number with decreasing of snowfalls (Fig. 2). The authors infer that snowfalls would influence on the distribution of P. tinctorum on the basis of the data that the lichen scarcely occurs in the areas with the maximum depth of annual snowfalls over 50 cm, in the five prefectures, i.e. Hyogo, Tottori, Iwate, Akita and Yamagata Prefecture (Fig. 2-5). the lichen seems to be not adapted to an excessively wet condition caused by heavy snowfalls. The authors here propose the 50 cm equivalent line of the maximum depth of annual snowfalls is properly called "Parmelia tinctorum Line", as it corresponds well with the growth-limiting line of P. tinctorum (Fig. 6).
