Abstract

In this paper, the separation of variables technique used to analyze the stress singularity at a vertex of bonded wedges is reviewed. The order of the stress singularity is determined by a root λ of an eigenequation, which is obtained from the condition for a nontrivial solution to a system of homogeneous equations representing the interface and boundary conditions for the vertex of bonded wedges. The singular stress field depends on the order of the root λ. When λ is a single root, the corresponding stresses appear as γλ-1 as γ→0 where λ is a distance measured from the singular point. However, if the root λ is a multiple root, the corresponding stresses may be of type γλ-1 log γ as γ→0, in which a logarithmic singularity is included.
