Abstract

It has been clarified that breast cancer screening with MMG has significantly reduced patient mortality. Here we report the results of such a screening system with MMG run by Toshima-ku Medical Association for the local citizens. The mass screening B system for breast cancer with MMG was selected. Four breast cancer patients (0.17%) out of 2, 322 women screened were found by palpation, and 8 (0.61%) out of 1, 315 women were detected by MMG screening. The breast cancer discovery rate in each MMG category was 0.9% in category III, 2.6% in category IV, and 66.7% in category V. Breast cancer at clinical stage I/II was found in 50% of the patients by the MMG system, which was significantly better than the detection rate for palpation alone. These results confirm that the breast cancer screening system with MMG is more effective than other breast cancer screening systems. However, education including training in MMG interpretation will be necessary for reducing the re-examination rate with the MMG screening system.
