To clarify the risk factors for breast cancer, we conducted a case-control study in Sapporo, Japan. A questionnaire was completed by 1, 124 women with histologically confirmed breast cancer between 1994 and 2000 and by 1, 310 age-matched hospital controls. Each control was individually matched with an index case within one year of her age. Women with any breast disease or cancer were excluded as controls. A conditional logistic regression model was applied to assess the associations. For premenopausal women, the age-adjusted breast cancer risk significantly increased in single women (p = 0.0384), with a history of benign breast disorder (p = 0.0291) and with a family history of breast cancer (p = 0.0085). This risk significantly decreased with a greater number of live births (p = 0.0047) and a longer overall lactation time (p = 0.0192). For postmenopausal women, the age-adjusted breast cancer risk significantly increased in single women (p = 0.0027), with a larger body mass index (p = 0.0075), with a history of benign breast disorder (p = 0.0217), and with a history of induced abortion (p = 0.0346). This risk significantly decreased with a greater number of live births (p = 0.0117). We have compared our findings to those previously reported in Japan and elsewhere.
