説明

Mammography is efficient in finding breast cancer at an early stage. On the other hand, since the female breast is known to be a radiosensitive organ, it is necessary to optimize the mammographic conditions, and at the same time to maintain its diagnostic accuracy. To this end, it is necessary to estimate and minimize the dose absorbed by the glandular tissue. In the quality assurance and quality control program, dose measurement is necessary in each hospital using a standard phantom. A standard compressed breast thickness for Japanese patients will also be needed for introducing appropriate mammographic guidelines.<BR>To establish the mean thickness of the compressed breast, data on breast thickness, X-ray tube current and exposure time (mAs) were collected for 2, 477 patients of various ages from 17 hospitals in Japan, and analyzed statistically. The mean thickness of the compressed breast for Japanese was 37.7mm. This tissue thickness is equivalent to 34.3mm for the PMMA phantom. Therefore we recommend 35mm PMMA as a standard phantom for estimating the average glandular dose in mammography examinations.
