Abstract

The early-growth variation among 37 Japanese beech open-pollinated progenies was studied. Seedling height was measured from the nought year to the third year. The growth rate was calculated from the seedling height. The seedling height and growth rate were significantly different among the 37 open-pollinated progenies at the 0.1 % significant level in all the measured years. Therefore early-growth variation would be partially under the genetic control. Significantly positive year-to-year correlation was found in the seedling height. The degree of the correlation was decreased, as the interval of the two measured years increased. The significant year-to-year correlation was not found in the growth rate at all. No year-to-year correlation of growth rate would be responsible for the decrease of the positive year-to-year correlation of the seedling height. No year-to-year correlation of growth rate would probably be attributable to the year-to-year physiological fluctuation caused by root-shortening treatment.
